My Fonts

I was on a bit of a type hunt the other day and noticed that My Fonts have at last undergone a dramatic and much needed facelift. Very nice!
ROCKET MAN
May 15, 2008
Not quite in the same league as Iron Man yet, but this swiss ex-fighter pilot has just spent the last 5 years developing a flight suit (of sorts), so he can fly. Looks like I’ll be starting my christmas list early this year then, also that reminds me I’d best start doing the Lottery too in that case. Just check out this amazing footage from the BBC site!
macrocosm and microcosm

Today’s Sun newspaper features an article which shows some amazing 3d photographs of the surface of Mars, beamed from 4.3 million miles to Earth. The detailed picture of a five-mile deep canyon on the planet’s terrain bears a remarkable resemblance to the famous choclate bar which bears the same name.

We tend to reserve any kind of white space on the walls for pin-ups of design sheets, pictures of pets and the like. But when I read in TV Choice for next week that this programme about Second Life was airing; it just had to be put to the front as a reminder. Post-it note also attached – ‘NOT TO MISS’. I’m new to this internet phenomenon, a 3D world where you can escape from it all and live your fantasy life. The documentary ‘Wonderland’ is on BBC2 next wednesday. It covers the story of when fantasy literally became a reality for this couple who met on the site and got married, and they’re getting married for real this year in celebration of their first year anniversary as a virtual couple. Intrigued? Oh yes.

inspired by nature

It goes to show that no form of innovation can be truly original when you look at the works explored by the Biomimicry Institute. Its quite complex, but basically their main focus is bringing ideas in design and technology inspired and derived from the biology of plants, animals and microbes, together to produce sustainable human systems. For example there’s an interesting case study in there about butterfly-inspired pigment-free colour. Certain insects have structural features in their skeletons which cause light to diffract and interfere in ways that create brilliant colour through the use of structure; rather than applying man-made chemical pigments.
From JPG to HD
August 30, 2007
The idea behind the HD Photo format, as it will hopefully replace the age-old JPEG format by offering greater support for new digital imaging trends like HDR (High Dynamic Range), and boasting much better image quality at half the overall file size.
Good news for Mac Users as a Photoshop CS2/CS3 plug-in for PowerPC and Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has recently been sprung and can been downloaded here, free from Microsoft.

Titan is a transmission electron microscope, the first of its kind in the UK and one of only a handful found in labs around the world. When it is running at full power it will be used to probe everything from new materials for ultra fast computers to tissue samples that may shed light on diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
